Perry was born to Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mother in each of the two shows she starred in on Roseanne. However, her parents did not allow her to act until she turned an adult because of the negative effects that stress could have on their daughter. Perry admitted that she wasn't confident in her acting during high school, but started doing it to make friends in Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. After graduating Perry moved into New York to search for jobs on television, landing small parts in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent however, her homesickness led Perry back home to California which is where she discovered acting jobs. Perry performed with her mom on stage in The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. The show featured the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry played nine roles in the ABC film The Family, in 2016. In 2017, Perry had the role of a political thriller Scandal alongside her father. She was also cast in her role on the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger than Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. She was cast in the role through an open audition despite having a connection to the persona.
